The science of nutrition has transcended the pages of
clinical journals into the mainstream media where
consumer demands for advice on matters of diet abound,
legislators are consciously weighing in on the quality
of snack food available to school aged children and
waiting rooms in doctors offices are filled with
families eager to ask questions about what they should
be feeding their children. Are our health professionals
and specialists equipped to answer these questions? The
Institute of Medicine which serves as adviser to the
nation on science, engineering, and medicine has created
a working body whose focus is to unify the medical and
nutritional scientific researchers and practitioners by
mandating a more intensive nutritional curriculum in
medical schools.

Their vision ~
The
committee proposes that the following topics in
nutrition become part of the basic curriculum of medical
schools and, furthermore, that they be integrated into
clinical clerkships: energy balance, role of specific
nutrients and dietary components, nutrition in the life
cycle, nutritional assessment, protein-energy
malnutrition, the role of nutrition in disease
prevention and treatment, and risks from poor dietary
practices stemming from individual, social, and cultural
diversity.
