Meet Jan Katzen-Luchenta, AMI, CFP-Author, Preconception/Prenatal and Children's Nutritionist

Jan with Dr. Joseph Hibbelh at the Generating Healthy Brains ConverenceAll of the current nutritional research points in the same conclusive direction; specific nutrients are required throughout the life-span to support mental health and deficiencies may prevent conception, compromise the neurological development of the embryo and fetus, diminish a child's ability to learn, and impair future mental health.

Health care reform begins with the next couple planning for pregnancy. It is of paramount importance that families and educational communities become familiar with the nutrients in the food we eat, their specific jobs, and understand how to "feed the brain" not just the body.

While investigating the role of dietary essential fatty acids in brain development, growth and function I had the great fortune of the tutelage of Professor Michael Crawford, the director of the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition at the London Metropolitan University.

Professor Crawford took me by the hand and led me in the direction of the evidence-based importance of Mom and Dad's nutritional status prior to conception and its role in the prevention of miscarriage, low birth weight, birth defects, and neurological difficulty.

Jan and Dr. Crawford

I continued researching nutrients uniquely and collaboratively in child development, finished writing my book, Nutrition For Learning; Feeding the Starving Brain, and authored the scientific paper, The Declaration of Nutrition, Health and Intelligence For The Child-To-Be published in the Nutrition and Health Journal, 2007, Vol 19, pp. 85-102. © 2007 A B Academic Publishers. Printed in Great Britain.

I dedicate my publications to my research director, Professor Michael Crawford. His brilliant, tireless scientific investigation has pioneered today's developmental nutritional paradigm - docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) as the evolutionary staple of the human brain.  [more]

"My four year-old daughter was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder (high functioning autistic). After reading your book and making sure she is eating the right foods that will help rather than hinder her brain capability she is now learning and socializing at a comparable rate to other children. The emotional outbursts have diminished."

"Jan has written a wonderful book which communicates the message about the importance of nourishment of the mother, infant, and child to serve the proper needs for brain development."

Praise for Nutrition for Learning

(Eight year-old son)

"The information we learned from reading your book has made a night and day difference in my son's ability to focus at school, therefore transforming his experience of school from a painful and stressful one to an enjoyable and pleasurable one.

A couple of weeks after these dietary changes, we had a conference with his teachers. Before we had even been seated, they were eagerly asking us what we were doing for Michael that was making such a night and day difference in his ability to accomplish his work (I think they thought we had put him on medication). We mentioned reading your book and making the dietary changes, and they couldn't believe it.

He has gone from crying after school saying that he hates himself and hates school, to being happy and confident as he goes off to school in the morning. (His teachers have told us that he has taken to reciting poetry in front of his classmates during morning meeting, by choice!)

We are so thankful for the helpful information you share in your book…it has been life-changing for our son! We are so grateful to you! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
