Best nutritional practices for children of all ages

Introducing Jan Katzen-Luchenta AMI CFP - Children’s Nutritionist

“In today’s fast food-a-rama, nutrients are pummeled and synthesized resulting in fake nourishment for real-life bodies and brains. Restoring nutritional potency back into the child’s diet combats “hidden hunger” – what brains suffer from even when bellies feel satiated from junk fats, sugary additives, and chemicalized and processed bulk.

I employ a well-researched, straight forward, and down-to-earth approach in partnering with families to design an individualized eating plan for their child’s acceptance and improved nutrient/health status. My style is to follow the child’s preferences for textures and tastes as a point of departure. (Picky eaters, beware!)”

Jan has studied nutrition and health under the guidance of renowned professor Michael Crawford, director of the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition at the London Metropolitan University. She interned with Nim Barnes, founder of Foresight Preconceptual Care (Bognor Regis, England) and is the Foresight U.S. programme director.

Jan specializes in providing highly informative and individualized eating plans for children of all ages. She is a certified AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) educator with decades of experience teaching and feeding children. She has published numerous articles and books on nutrition with a focus on preconceptional health, brain and child development, and nourishment that supports attention and learning. Jan is on the advisory boards of The Mother and Child Foundation (UK) and The Montessori Education for Autism Foundation (UK).

Who Benefits From Individualized Children’s Nutritional Guidance?

  • School-aged children of all ages – Nutritional deficiencies, food intolerances, and blood sugar fluctuations affect developing learning styles. As a result, we must take nutrition as seriously as we do any other aspect of a child’s education, physical and mental health - especially at the preschool level when learning difficulty is easier to remediate. Early intervention by identifying patterns of malnourishment and foods that trigger inattention, behavioral, and mood difficulty scaffolds best possible outcome for children diagnosed with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurodevelopmental challenges.

  • Parents and siblings – One of the main goals of nutritional guidance for children is nutritional education. Intentional shopping, meal planning, and food preparation benefits not only the children but the entire family. Improved nutritional status helps reduce the risk of many health conditions such as weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Our goal – profound shifts in your child’s health, academic achievement, and future well-being. Timing, composition, and glycemic index of snack/meals can also influence a child’s delicate metabolism and emotions – influencing academic performance and/or a family’s trip to the grocery store!

Children’s Nutrition Consultations with Jan - What to Expect:

As soon as you employ Jan’s services you will receive comprehensive nutrition, health, lifestyle, and school progress report questionnaires. Nutrition educational hand-outs will be provided every step of the way.

Email Jan to set-up your complimentary telephone consultation. Jan@nutritionforlearning.com or call 602.370.4036

Initial consultation (telephone or Skype): Includes evaluation of your child’s nutritional intake, health and lifestyle questionnaire forms. Nutrition at a cellular level will be explained. Together we will develop a priority list of foods to balance nutrient intake. New techniques for food preparation will be discussed. You will receive a well-researched list of foods to support brain development, attention, learning, and memory. A simple food journal will be introduced.

Progress consultation (one -two weeks): Several days of your child’s food journal will be evaluated. Timing and meal composition modifications may be necessary based on your child’s attention, behavior, mood, and general response to the nutritional changes. We will look at ways to cut corners with time restraints and eating out (parties, etc.) without sabotaging "core" whole food nutrition objectives.

Initial and progress consultations $150.00

Follow-up consultations as needed: For some individuals continued weekly or bi-weekly nutritional consultations are needed for reinforcing new eating habits. Additional food journaling in tandem with your observational and school progress reports yields life-changing results. Teacher consultations are recommended.

Follow-up consultations $75.00

Jan may recommend heavy metal and mineral balancing in collaboration with Foresight Preconceptual Care. Foresight link www.foresight-preconception.org.uk
