While investigating the role of dietary essential fatty acids in brain growth, development and function I had the great fortune of corresponding with Professor Michael Crawford, the director of the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition at the London Metropolitan University. Professor Crawford also wrote the foreword for my new book,
"Nutrition For Learning: Feeding The Starving Brain."
One thing is for certain; children require special dietary plans with snacks and meals that support brain development, sustain energy, and create emotional balance. When you read my book,
"Nutrition For Learning," you will be able to identify the patterns of eating that might be causing learning and behavioral problems for your child and learn so much more.

The perfect companion to my book on supportive nutrition for learning is my video,
"The Making of Great Little People." The first segment is on Nutrition, the inner prepared environment. My videographer and I were able to catch on film the behavior of her daughter on different days under the dietary influence of breakfasts with different components. The extreme behavioral differences were remarkable. This is definitely a must for any parent, school, or nonbeliever of the impact of nutrition (or lack of) on a child's behavior.
Filmed in my classroom, "The Making of Great Little People" video is 31 minutes long and is packed with material making ideas, sections on conflict resolution, games and material making for early literacy and so much more.

In 1998 I wrote my first
book, "Awakening Your Toddler’s Love of Learning" and followed
with "Little Learner’s Diet, Food Balancing, and Focusing" in
2004. I consult with schools, families and individual
children covering a broad spectrum of educational and
nutritional concerns. I am a free lance journalist and
regularly contribute to Tomorrow’s Child Magazine, Infant
and Toddler’s Magazine, The Public School Montessorian, and the newsletter and Nutritional and Health Journal published by the McCarrison Society (UK).
The McCarrison Society is a group of nutritional scientists, MDs, health professionals and teachers who are dedicated to sharing their nutritional research and experience as it defines and redefines nutrition’s vital role in creating and maintaining human life. It is a great honor to be a member of this society and also a presenter at the Generating Healthy Brains conference (which they sponsored in Jan. 2006). I am also a member of the Montessori Foundation.
While researching and writing about
nutritional influences on learning, I simultaneously
discovered the powers of various nutrients for healthy
fetal development. Pre-conceptual care of the expectant
mother and father and its role in the prevention of
miscarriage, birth defects, and neurological handicaps
is the central theme of my current nutritional research,
continuing practitioner education, and focus of my
private practice; Whole Food Nutritional Therapy,
Ilumina Healing Sanctuary based in Scottsdale, Arizona.

My absolute joy and inspiration are the children that I continue to teach five hours a day at the Khalsa Montessori School in Phoenix, Arizona. My second absolute joy is watching a child who struggles with concentration and disrupts the peace in the classroom transform into a focused, hands-on chef in the kitchen attached to accomplishment and community.

** Jan was recently
appointed to the advisory panel of
The Mother and Child Foundation.
The Mother and Child Foundation funds research and global
advocacy of the importance of the role of the mother in
ensuring optimal pre-natal and post-natal development of the
child.
Jan is working with a instant-food
manufacturer in South Africa, e'Pap, as counsel for
adding essential fatty acids to their vitamin and
mineral fortified porridge. They are currently working
on a joint project utilizing her book - Nutrition for
Learning - as an adjunct to feeding programs throughout
Africa for nutritional education. This way teachers,
health providers and caregivers can pan through whatever
local agriculture opportunities avail to maximize every
bite for the children.
